Club History

The Fond du Lac Running Club was formed in 1979 by  Paul Butzen and Bob Bailey to bring affordable, quality running and walking events to the greater Fond du Lac area.

Today, the club has grown to over 200 members.  We offer a variety of running and walking events, seasonal track workouts, Medals for Miles program, and "Fondy Footnotes," our monthly club newsletter.

Memberships in our club are available to anyone interested in running and walking.

Fond du Lac is located in Eastern Wisconsin on the southern tip of Lake Winnebago.  The city has a population of approximately 40,000, and centrally located between Milwaukee (65 miles south), Green Bay (60 miles north), and Madison (65 miles south-west).

October.  The leaves fall off the trees and daylight savings time comes to an end just after Halloween.  Two things I don’t like to see as a distance runner.  Unless you enjoy running in cold weather on snow and ice, having to think about training through another winter is a daunting task. I just hope we don’t get another 90” of snow.

I would encourage people to visit an event in Menasha on November 1 directed by the PaceSetters Running Club, who are our neighbors to the north. Their annual St. Joe’s 5k run/walk is a popular event with the proceeds going to a worthy cause.  Another thing that makes the event unique is it has a Portsmouth start.  This is where people are seeded and assigned to a wave based on age and gender.  The USATF 5k single age road race records are used to determine which wave you start in and the runner who comes closest to his or her single age USATF 5k road race record will be the overall winner.  The objective of a Portsmouth race is to reward the fittest runner without regard to age or gender.  See the article in this newsletter for more information.

Those of you who like more of a social atmosphere to go along with your road race, you might like the Tyranena Beer Run in Lake Mills held November 8. It starts and finishes at the brewery with a half marathon and 4.37 mile event (referred to as a 1/2 barrel route and 1/6 barrel route respectively).  If you are looking for an event to do before the winter hits, I’d recommend a 10k or 2 mile in Sheboygan on Thanksgiving morning and a 5 & 2 mile (with kids runs) in Kiel on December 6.  See the race calendar in this newsletter for more information.

The club’s next upcoming event is the Turkey Trot Prediction Run on November 15.  Planning for this event is going well and we hope to see a good turnout on race day.  I like the fact that we give out so many awards at the Turkey Trot.  However, it’s amazing how close you still have to be to your prediction time to win a turkey.  It is quite competitive every year.  This is also a perfect event for a runner or walker who is new to road races, or has never participated in one, since they don’t have to worry how quickly they complete their event or how good (or bad) of shape they are in. It simply doesn’t matter at a prediction run.  And don’t forget about the kids, as 10 awards will be given out in the 1/2 run (free for kids 12 & under).  See more information on our website and in this newsletter.

I’ll see you at the top.
